PUTTING HBCU STUDENT ATHLETES FIRST

Historically, there are huge disparities between PWIs and HBCUs and this includes NIL opportunities and education. Universities and athletic departments are restricted from providing student athletes with direct assistance with NIL and many institutions, particularly HBCUs, do not have the resources, staff, or bandwidth to provide the necessary support.

Seeing a need to help HBCU student athletes, Rise HBCU was born.

OUR GOALS

Prior to July 2021, the NCAA restricted college athletes from making money from their name, image, and likeness. While college athletes can now monetize their NIL, many have not engaged with brands or started to market themselves properly due to a lack of information, education, and resources on NIL, specifically athletes at HBCUs.

As a result, these are our goals:

  • Opportunities

Create and provide NIL opportunities for HBCU student athletes

  • Relationships

Serve as a liaison between student athletes, brands, companies, and Rise HBCU membership

  • Inequality

Address and alleviate racial inequality in intercollegiate sports

  • Education

Educate HBCU student athletes on NIL and other topics closely associated with NIL such as business, legal, intellectual property, finance, and mental health

  • Careers

Provide career opportunities both during and after the student athlete’s collegiate career

  • Community

Create a fun, inspiring, and inclusive environment for Rise HBCU members and students athletes to build community and fellowship with one another

FAQs

What percentage of the contributions goes to the athletes?

We aim to keep our overhead costs to operate the membership very low so the athletes can get the most lucrative NIL deals. Right now, ninety percent (90%) of contributions (membership and one-time) go to the athletes. Rise HBCU has an hourly employee, independent contractors, and interns to assist with administrative tasks and other duties that help to keep Rise HBCU running properly. We have expenses related to IT, marketing materials, content creation, and fan engagement experiences.
